BBS – Behaviour Based Safety

We report below a brief presentation of BBS, in order to instill the basic philosophy in which we firmly believe rather than the criteria for implementation (which are complex and articulated).

Foreword

Behavior Based Safety (BBS), is now probably the most effective method to reduce workplace injuries, acting through the reduction or elimination of the behaviors and insecure actions.

It is known that about 80% of the accidents occur due to inappropriate behavior, and not for lack of equipment or environmental “unsafe” conditions; on the basis of this statement is evident the enormous potential of a methodology designed and studied on changing the behavior of the operators (at all levels) to obtain the continuous execution of actions in accordance with established security protocols.

The BBS has shown in every working environment its efficacy in terms of objective, through the reduction or elimination of injuries in a large number of companies and in a wide type of work all over the world.

Characteristics of BBS

BBS is a process that is implemented consistently within the enterprise and that is based on techniques of motivation of workers to the periodic self- observation, to the reporting behavior or near misses and finally to the constant supply of feedback and positive recognition for correct behavior.

BBS eliminates the need of punitive sanctions and develops in all workers involved a shared “culture” security. A good percentage of the process is managed directly by the workers themselves, helping to achieve a better work environment in terms of relationships in all hierarchical levels.

Each BBS intervention is based on the detection of what was happening before surgery and after it, thus allowing feedback measurable on an objective basis.

Advantages of BBS

The implementation of protocols and BBS projects allows to create different characteristically benefits for the employee and for the company, compared to traditional approaches to security:

  1. Reduced or zero accidents and suffering, in a clinical and human profile, in respect of the work ethic;
  2. Improving the relational environment between the various hierarchical levels, even outside of the context of workplace safety, increasing the sense of belonging to an “excellent” company, dedicated to the values and social responsibility;
  3. Resetting the unfaithful reporting or non-reporting of near misses, resulting in a possible preventive action (act before injury can occur) and non-reactive;
  4. Strong reduction of legal and union sequels;
  5. Possible rescheduling and reduction of insurance premiums;
  6. Reduction of accidents, as well as injuries, resulting in savings of direct and indirect costs resulting from the occurrence of an injury;
  7. Significant reduction of days lost due to injury;
  8. Increased productivity due to behavior management strategies, which are used by line managers even to get behaviors relating to the production, as well as security.
